Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case Live Updates: Two Assistant Commissioners of Police and an inspector have been suspended in connection with the vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14 for alleged negligence as they were on duty at hospital, said officials. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against ACPs Shakir Uddin Sardar, Ramesh Shah Chowdhury, and inspector Rakesh Minz.
CBI officers may conduct a polygraph test on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, news agency PTI reported. “We want to further verify Ghosh’s answers, as there have been discrepancies in some of the replies to our questions. Therefore, we are mulling over the option to conduct a polygraph test on him,” an official told PTI. Ghosh had appeared before the CBI for fifth day in a row Tuesday, facing questions about inconsistencies in his statements.
What’s the case? A 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, sparking national outrage. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested in the case. The incident led to nationwide protests by doctors, demanding justice for the victim and a law ensuring safety for all resident doctors in colleges and hospitals. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also faced criticism over the TMC government’s handling of the case. Moreover, the Supreme Court ordered the removal of name, photos and videos of the trainee doctor from media platforms. The bench expressed deep concern over the “horrific” rape and murder of the trainee doctor and constituted a 9-member task force to work out modalities for the safety of doctors at workspaces. It also directed the CBI to submit a status report by August 22.
